  • 1900/01: The zoo is extended. Within only two years a new building for big cats is built as well as the primate house and the main and administrative buildings.
  • 1910: The aquarium is built, in which fish and other sea creatures from all over the world still swim today.
  • 1913: The aquarium is extended to include a terrarium. Snakes, lizards and even alligators are still housed in this Wilhelminian-style building today.
  • 1926: Visitors can admire pachyderms from Asia in the newly opened elephant house.
  • 1928: Wild activity at all heights – the aviaries and the outdoor pens for the big cats are opened. The Jason monument is also erected.
  • 1929: Bears move into the newly erected bear castle.
  • 1934: Island enclosures are built for macaque monkeys, baboons and penguins.
  • 1935: Fun for both kids and adults: the zoo builds an animal kindergarten for stroking, petting and feeding.
  • 1969: The birds start chirping: the walk-in bird house opens its doors. It houses exotic bird species at tropical temperatures. The zoo school is also established.
  • 1976: On the Rosenthal paddock the ungulate enclosures are finished. African domestic goats, Chinese water deer and Australian red-necked wallabies come to Leipzig
  • 1992: One of the oldest parts of the zoo is renovated: after 82 years the aquarium is finally renovated and extended. Additional tanks create new habitat for the fish.

Map 2013 Map 2015
After paying the entrance fee we keep to the right to first meet the flamingos and then the African penguins. Then its time to enter the aquarium, on the right we are having the aquarium and the left the terrarium. In the aquarium we meet especially tropical fish from the sea horse to the sharks. In the terrarium we meet animals from the alligator to the chameleons. . Out side again  we are in front of us after a while the old monkey house and carnivore hose, the carnivore house is today a museum for inviromental protection. Back to the aquarium square we turn to the right inside the sloth bear forrest, these bears are sharing theire enclosures with Rhesus macaques.  At the bird aviaries, home to different macaws and ibises among others, we turn right. The first stop then is the bee hive. Next to the birds aviaries is the old penguin enclosure and across a tropical bird house, with a frontroom with several aviaries and a main free flying room, here you also meet bats and Southern slender-tailed cloud rat. In front of the house we then meet the brown fur seal. To the left of it we find the black rhino. Now going to the right we again turn to the old carnivore house and then follow the path to the Godwana land, the zoos tropical house. You begin your journey walking through an active vulcano watching still living fossils, like the horseshoe crab, even deeper inside the mountain you find noctural animal as the eastern quoll. Then we go towards the light and a hidden jungle, the godwana. First you have to decide if you want to take on a small boat trip through the jungle for a small fee, learning about the first days of our planet. Afterwards you walk through the jungle, the first step is to the right the squirrel monkey island, that you can enter.  Following the main path again we see sloths, giant otters, arapaimas and the ocelot from South Anerica.  Followed by Africa we meet the bat-eared fox, Kirk's dikdik, pygmy hippo, Hamlyn's  and Diana monkeys. The next area is Asia with fishing cats, oriental small-clawed otters, false gharial, Komodo dragons and the Malayan tapir. Going outside the house again we meet on the path on the right the coaty and the prarie dog. Passing then the two large aviaries, the one for larger birds of prey, like the king vulture and the other for storks like the wooly-necked stork we are reaching the Asian elephants. Inside theire house we finde the only pangolines in Europe. Following the pelican lake we across find the tiger-taiga with Amur tigers and different squirrel species.  Crossing up to the pelican lake are the enclosures for the anoa and the Visayan warty pigs. Turning right then we soon on the right are having Amur leopard and on the left the Australian enclosure with red kangaroos and wallabies. The next area is europes largest ape house called "Pongo land", home to the orangutan, gorilla, chimpanzee and bonobo. Passing a resting erea we reach the Asian forest, home to cranes, Siberian musc deer and the thamin. Another forrest animal, though from Africa is the following okapi. Then we follow the path to we rech the large Savannah. To the left is a flamingo lagoon for lesser flamingos and behind them the stables. Here we find some dessert animals, like Ansell's mole rat.  Outside we follow the savannah to meet giraffes, zebras, antelopes and ostriches. Then suddenly on the right we se the lion, the king of the savannah. A bit integrated in the savannah, still for them selfs is an enclosure for meerkats and one for the spotted hyena. Across we find the pygmy goats and the tammar wallaby. A bit longer following the savannah and then looking across again we see the Dahomey cattle, boer goats, llamas and alpacas. Turning to the right we then have two enclosure for monkeys, home to the Hamadryas baboon and the lion-tailed macaque. Following the bird aviaries from earlier we reach the lesser panda. On the left are then several cages for snow leopards. Behind the lesser pandas are some aviaries for owls. Following the mainpath we then on the left are having the Prezewalski's horse and a bit later to the left the Dall sheep. Behind the walls we then meet the childrens zoo, where you can touch some farm animals. Outside again we turn right and walk towards the exit to meet the last animal, the maned wolf.

Zwergschimpansen

DK: Denne have er an af tysklands ældste og især kendt for sit kæmpe tropehus "Godwanaland" med tapirer, kæmpeoddere og mange flere. Legledes er dog også den resterende have interessant og man møder da f.eks. også europas største menneskeabehus med bl.a. bonoboer
